Mother holding her son up on her hip.

A Little Less Mine

The sun is flickering behind the clouds.
There's a hint of rain in the air.
My living room is so serene,
And I've a thought to share.

One morning soon you will awaken.
Night will have drawn the line.
I'll look at you and somehow know
That you are a little less mine.

I've looked forward, yet dreaded that moment.
It was only a matter of time
til toddler's toys and kiddy carts
Of babyhood lay behind.

I suppose all mothers experience it;
That little twinge of despair
When first born babe marches off to school,
How can a mother prepare?

Ever since your birth, you've needed me
Dependend on me as no one else could.
And now I must learn to share you
As any good mother should.

So enjoy all the wonderful experiences;
In all you do take pride.
For life is like a carousel,
We all must take a ride.

Always remember how much we love you.
One day soon, you'll be a man.
You were entrusted to our care
It was all just a part of His plan.
