Flight Has Been Delayed

(Inspired by the song "Traveler" by Carolyn Arends in memory of my friend Modupe Oluwalademi who left Nigeria to reach his final destination June 5, 2003)

          The terminal was busy
          Most flights had been delayed
          Frustration settled harshly
On those people who had paid

To sit in seats of plastic
          To eat tasteless airport fare
          To make calls apologizing
For the fact they won't be there

          Some will read bestsellers
          Some will cause a stink
Some will try to take a nap
While I take pause to think

          While we're headed separate places
And we may never meet again
I know those who follow Jesus
Will be together in the end

There are those I spend my time with
The one's who know my Lord
We tend to wound each other
          With trembling verbal sword

We sit in pews of lumber
Or we sit in a padded chair
          Some will hear the message
          While others just aren't 'there'

          Sometimes we act like sinners
          Sometimes we act like saints
          Sometimes we act like pilgrims
Oh the picture our lives paint

          While we're headed separate places
          In truth, we'll meet again
          Because our final destination
Will bring us together in the end.
